Creative Summer
July 10, 2007
Here is something I love:
Kate is at it again. She asked me if she could embroider something to make a pillow. Of course! She drew this frog and I traced the back side of the drawing with a transfer pencil and then ironed it onto this cotton. She worked on it for about 30 minutes a couple of days ago and then put it down. This is why it takes her six months.
Not to be left out, Jane is working on a swan from the Sublime Stitching book. She really wasn't interested in stitching one of her own drawings. She is a wonderful little artist, but she likes lots of details and that doesn't always come across well with embroidery floss.
Something else I love: the Creative Summer flickr group started by Molly. Wow! There are lots of great ideas over there and I plan posting as much as I can. I am especially enamored with Mama Urchin's lily pad toss game. Such a wonderful idea.
What creative things are you doing with your kids this summer?
I'm loving that frog.

What wonderful gift to give your children, teaching them embroidery, sewing, knitting etc. To grow up with that creative outlet and the ability to make their own clothes...They will thank you for it later!
My little sweetie (6yo)has no interest in any of it and will only wear what I make her grudgingly...but she can tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about horses and three-toed sloths and South African Dung Beetles!! : )

i wish my daughter could embroider too...she is not 5 yet, maybe too young ?
i made her a weaver loom with a box, for now she is enjoying it ;o)

It seems to be a froggy week. I just can't get Katrina into the embroidery yet. We have some fiber-y things planned like dying yarn with easter egg dye and making miles of i-cord. I'm glad you like the toss game - we've been having fun with it.

I love that the girls are still being crafty!
Since Jack is still a bit on the wee side, he is currently enamoured with water. Water in buckets, water from the sprinkler, water in sponges, watering the garden, water, water, everywhere! Not super creative for me, but it is amazing what he does with it.

The embroideries are lovely...and we've been working on the same thing. After years of using my embroidery hoops as wheels(!)..my 2 eldest are now hell bent on sewing, sewing, sewing. It amazes me that the seemingly 2 headless chickens are patient enough to sit and make such small stitches for a good half an hour. I'm so looking forward to this 'creative summer'! (I've posted their works in progress in the Flickr Pool.)

I'm so impressed! That frog drawing is super! Good luck Kate! Jane's swan is quite pretty too! You girls are loaded with talent!

I love the embroidery! Can't wait to see them finish.
As for fun, creative things, I just take it day by day. I want to plan more, but that doesn't always happen. We're hitting the kitchen more together and that's fun. we've also been hanging out a lot outside, whne it's not raining. :0)

Thanks for the heads up about the Flickr group! I've recently found your blog and have already added it to my reader. I can't wait to try out your tutorials. You might want to check out my blog for more ideas for kids - I'm a Montessori teacher and avid crafter, so my posts generally revolve around children and creativity. Thanks for such beautiful photos and plentiful inspiration.

Cute stuff Erin! I need to get Anna back on sewing. She took a week of Knit Nook classes and loved it. I am going to show her the work of Jane and Kate and get her moving....My Kate...I am not sure I trust her with a needle!

Fun projects! We aren't quite to that stage yet around here. I tried to get Elise to do some of those lacing card things, but she didn't seem quite ready yet.

Love the girls' craft projects. Do you sit down and embroider with them? Or are you making your granny squares? ;)
we aren't really doing much creative this summer...except lots and lots of legos...and a bit of drawing here and there. I had big plans, but petered out, as usual. One only has so much energy.

Oh that frog is so cute! Can't wait to see it when it's all done.
As for creative things we are doing this summer...I don't know if it's creative but...we decided we are going to learn about different countries. Danielle picked Egypt so we got some books out from the library and are doing a research project on it. We are also hanging out at the park, camping, swimming and going to the beach. Not too much crafting going on over here. A bit of knitting and that's it!

well I don't have kids but I thought I would add my comment. I saw in a magazine once that a child drew a picture of the whole family and the mom embroidered it, and framed it, it was adorable, congrats to your girls on their beautiful work!
