Rambling thoughts
September 14, 2009
I know fall is on it's way when Fatty decides it's time for a one-pot meal. He cooked up a yummy Cuban black bean stew from The Splendid Table's How to Eat Supper. Well, at least the two of us thought it was tasty. One girl doesn't like black beans and the other doesn't like ham. Meals that don't go over well with the kids are extremely frustrating for all of us. At the same time, I refuse to give in to them. How are they going to learn to like anything new if they aren't exposed to it? There was rice and homemade bread. No one went hungry.
I know I promised more about the skirt - it's coming. I just need a few more photos. And I wish I had something else to show and tell about, but both projects I worked on this weekend have to remain under wraps for awhile. Frustrating, especially since I think they both are coming together really well.
I'm very excited about the new fabric line, Hope Valley, by Denyse Schmidt. And the Amy Butler one, too. Both look so promising - colors that speak to me and patterns I like. I had better start saving my pennies!
And did you see what Blair did for Value Village ? Oh my word. I don't even like Halloween a whole lot, but her projects have me plotting a few trips to the thrift store. They are that good.
OK - this post is pretty random. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.
I saw that halloween post.
I must make a sojourn to the thrift store!
Can't wait to see more of your skirt.

I believe in ghosts- and actually had an encounter yesterday- I'm not a big fan of halloween just because of that.

oh, well, then he needn't share, because I have that cookbook sitting on my table. Such a good one. I can't wait to give this one a try.
I've been baking like a madwoman lately.
I get frustrated when I can't share something for awhile, too. And then when I finally can share it, chances are that I've forgotten about it or it doesn't feel relevent anymore because so much time has passed.

I'm really looking forward to Hope Valley too... so beautiful! My mum-in-law hates Halloween decor but those are so cute they might appeal to her!

Ooh, I hadn't seen Hope Valley before, but it really is nice. Vintagey but still modernish. (Thank goodness I don't have a job writing descriptive copy for fabric collections...)

I love rambling. :) My 10yr old girl is soooo picky about food. It makes my husband irritated. Im hoping she will outgrow it.

I really need to get that cookbook! I know it's fabulous. It's just that I have so many cookbooks, which I love to read, but I rarely plan ahead enough to actually follow recipes. Something else I want to work on getting better at.
I'm glad to hear you say that about not giving into your girls. I'm not a mother, so I realize I have NO idea how hard it can be at times, but I credit my mother with making me eat at least 2 bites of everything she made. All these years later, I still hate carrots (by themselves) and sweet potatoes, but I learned to try food and found I loved so many different flavors. More than she does, actually.

Random is how it is sometimes. Have a great week Erin!

My first crockpot dinner of the fall is cooking while I type this. Minutes before reading this post, I just *randomly* told someone I work with that "you know it's fall when the crockpot comes out". Enjoy!

Blair's projects were amazing! I feel the same way about Halloween and now I'm all jazzed up about it. Who knew?
I need a good one pot meal tonight. Time to go rummage.

Cuban black bean stew sounds delicious right now. I know what you mean about not giving in-we have similar issues here, plus it would be exhausting cooking up two different meals.
That bread certainly looks yummy!

I've been thinking about crockpot and one pot meals as the nights have gotten cooler. I'll have to try that recipe!

I sometimes feel like I'm cooking for myself. They would be happy with chicken nuggets every night. It is very frustrating. Good to know I'm not alone in that - thanks.

I'm pandering less to the whims of the kids in our evening menus - and they aren't starved yet.
I gather the Amy Butler collection has some flannes - I feel new lounge pants coming on...

I think I'm going to have to start saving pennies too. Both fabric lines are amazing! Black Bean stew sounds wonderful to me.

We deal with the same dinner issues here. Tonight it was corn chowder in the turquoise version of your same pot. I think they'll finally cave and become the foodies we want them to become, right??? Yummy bread you made. Can't wait to see the skirt. Looks beautiful!

I love your ramblings.
And Blair's post today is awesome! Can't wait to try some of it out!!!

I totally agree with you Erin. After four years of asking my 4.5 year old to try chicken, and putting it on her plate meal after meal.....well, she finally tried it without making a face last night. When I was giving her a bath later that night, she says, "Mom, that chicken you made was really good, I think I might want more!" Exposure is key. Your meal sounds awesome!

I took at peek at the Amy Butler Love fabric. It's really beautiful. I might have to save my pennies too and buy me some Love! Thanks for sharing! :-)

AMEN on the first paragraph. When our kids were younger and I cooked something they hadn't eaten before the way the rules of the table went was that you had to at least eat a spoon or forkful so that you can try it. If they didn't like it, then they didn't have to eat it, but at least they tried it.BTW, that one dish meal you had sounds delish.

Amy's fabrics are beautiful and although i don't sew well, I like to collect fabric because I color is eye candy.
I LOVE Halloween. I have for years. I can't help it, and I begin thinking about projects during the summer. Blair has some great ideas and I am already printing a few off.
