Hazel's kitchen bed
August 24, 2010
I warned you.
I sewed a ginormous dog bed for Hazel to use in the kitchen. Well, more specifically, the tiny hallway space adjacent to the kitchen. Breezer, our last dog, used to hang out in this very spot because she could be in on all the action, watching us all go about our days. Unlike Breezer, who stayed put most of the time, Hazel follows me around the house like, well, a puppy. It's quite cute until you are stepping on her, ahem, while trying to pack the lunch boxes or make dinner. So I made her a bed. And, I think she likes it, even if it is rather large (about 52" x 30" finished).
I used Patchwork Promenade from the County Fair line by Denyse Schmidt because it has the patchwork look without all the piecing. It's also home dec weight which is perfect for something that is going to get slobbered on and washed almost weekly. I quilted two panels with freeform loops - one for the top and one for the bottom. I put a zipper in one side of the cushion so the insert can be removed for washing. After the zipper was in, I quilted the side panels with straight-ish lines. The fabrics on the sides and the piping (all 10 yards!) are from that same fabric line. For the insert, I used an old sheet and stuffed it with about 4 pounds of poly-fil. Everything came from my stash except the zipper and the piping - bonus!
It felt good to get back to the sewing machine after a long break. I didn't realize how much I missed it. I was also happy with how it came together even though there were some missteps along the way. Bad measuring, wonky quilting, less than perfect corners - they really don't matter. It is a dog bed, for goodness sake.
This isn't the end of sewing for the dog either. Just saying.
it's fantastic. lucky pup! and they seem to be her colors! :)

That is both ginormous and totally beautiful. I made a windbreak for the beach out of that fabric and I love i. I need to make beds for my dogs. I wonder if Luna can figure out how to hog both of them at once.
Off to see what home dec weight I would be willing to sacrifice to a dog bed...

i had been saving this print for a quilt. i decided to go ahead and use it here because i have to look at it every day so i might as well love it, right?

dang. fancy. my dog got a denim bed cover, over a vinyl/fake leather covered foam core so that it might be easier clean up if the cat peed on it, which, ahem, has happened. But that's a whole other set of quantifying circumstances. This is super cute, though.

She's so stylish!
I'm sewing Jerry a bed right now, but it's not nearly so stylish. ; )

I see a whole new avenue of doggy sewing opening up. And who wouldn't, with such a cute client?

Fatabulous! So great. What a lucky dog. She's awfully cute.

Oh, this is totally inspiring! Great idea with the old sheet and fiberfill.

What a lucky dog! (and adorable) Great job.

Oh, love the first photo! She seems to be quite at home on her new bed.
My dog (who happily cuddles with one of our cats) chewed a bottle of liquid seaweed fertilizer on his bed last winter, depriving himself of a bed and my seedlings of nourishment. Perhaps I'll have to make him a new bed before the cold weather sets in again. Right now he's happy to pass out on the cold kitchen tiles.

She is so darn pretty. And that pretty bed is big enough for you guys to snuggle with her. Perfect.

wonderful! I'm pretty sure that she is so happy with it!

I am so glad you did this. I kept thinking I could but....what's the hitch. Clearly there isn't one. I see some sewing for the girls in my future, I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Spoiling the puppy is so fun! Awesome bed.

Hazel's bed it "to die for". Coincidentally the boys and I were in the fabric store looking for a nice print for a little bed for Daisy Dash today. I think I let my boys have too much of a say so because we ended up with camouflage fleece...again. How does this happen?

so adorable and inspiring! I really should make more for my two pups, but they are still so naughty and like the chew. Some day soon, I hope! :)

If I lick crumbs from the floor, can I have one, also?
Posted by: Molly | August 24, 2010 at 10:32 PM
I just made one for my dog too... a very large one (she's a golden). But she doesn't like to lay on it, she prefers to attack it, which you can see in this funny video (http://jennnash.typepad.com/blog/2010/07/reese-her-bed.html)
I saw you got her from KY lab rescue.. YEA for KY!!! Do you guys hang out at any dogparks?

Wow, that's one lucky puppy. The bed is gorgeous, looks very comfortable. she will love it in Winter.

If you are quilting this way for a dog, you must be good - and she must be special. I'd love to use that pillow!!
Posted by: amy | August 25, 2010 at 08:08 AM
It's bad to be jealous of a dog's bed, right?
Posted by: larissa | August 25, 2010 at 08:15 AM
I love that Hazel rated so high that you used a fabric you had been saving for a quilt to make a bed for her--which in essence means that you made a quilt for your beloved pooch, right?
Posted by: Suzanne | August 25, 2010 at 08:17 AM
Oh, this is beautiful! I made a similar one out of sturdy home decor weight scraps for our dog. http://lieslmade.wordpress.com/2010/04/03/a-dog-bed/ Everyone thought I was crazy for making something so "fancy" for the dog. But nothing's too good for our pooch! :) And like one of my blog readers said: *it's going in your home, might as well be appealing to you.*
And, Hi. I've been lurking here at your blog for a while now. It's lovely and ispiring.

Oh, how lucky to be a dog in the House on Hill Road!
Posted by: Andrea | August 25, 2010 at 08:56 AM
what a lucky girl! my brother refers to that "following everywhere" habit as Shelter Dog Syndrome - as if they're afraid of being abandoned again. Our two rescues still do it (we've had them for several years) and so does my parents. Just keep loving on her! =)

What a lucky dog to have such a nice mummy who makes her a nice bed. The fabric is so beautiful and I am sure she will enjoy sleeping on it.
Happy week

it's perfect! and your pup is beautiful.
i've been using up my county fair stash lately too. the cheater print is the best.

Lucky dog. Great job. No dog care about wonky bits.
I'm getting my sewing mojo back too... so maybe... just maybe I will make my dogs a new bed. Theirs is falling apart.

I love this. I've got 6 yards of this fabric for (eventually) a quilt for my bed. That's probably never going to happen, so great idea!

Cute dog bed. I be a doggie collar and leash patterned after your camera straps are in the works! ; ) Lucky Hazel.

I love that fabric - and the bed is just gorgeous! I have one more piece I'm saving...and I already have a quilt made out of it too...

Hazel is one lucky puppy! :)

What a great bed... I have been meaning to make my pups one but I couldn't figure out what to stuff it with; as two rather large German Shepherds would never fit on a small foam insert. Thanks for telling what you did to fill yours.

*grin* We've got a black lab with the same tendencies...she camps out at the foot of the stairs on a similar size bed. She can't bear to not be a part of the action, but comfort is high on her list, too.
