Pillow Week Challenge - How to Make Piping Video Tutorial
November 07, 2010
I received numerous requests for information on piping so I decided to do a tutorial. A video tutorial. Gulp. I'm totally nervous, hate the sound of my voice and apologize for my hand hogging most of the screen in part of it. I do think, hand and all, you can still see what I'm doing. It's kind of long - sorry about that. But I think it will be helpful so here you go.
How to make piping by House on Hill Road from Erin Harris on Vimeo.

I've also set up a Flickr group so we can all see what everyone else is making this week. It's right here. I'll be back tomorrow with the pillows I finished today and another video - this time how to put the zipper in. I swear it's easier than you think.
See you then!
So happy you made a Flickr group! I can't WAIT to see what other people make!!!

Thank you so much! It makes so much more sense to watch you doing it. I have to make three pillows today, and though I won't be using piping, yet!, I am definitely going to try that next. thanks Susie

Natalie, I have a Bernina Aurora 430 and you can use it for free motion quilting and with a walking foot. I love it!

Thanks so much for taking the time to put together this video Erin. I sew a lot and have done since I was in my teens but there a several things I have never bothered to learn and always take the easy way out. This is definitely one of them and I am determined to have a go now! You might even get me back sewing in zippers!!

Dang, now I want one of those thread-cutter doo-hickeys on the side of my machine.
I learned volumes here. Thanks, Erin.

A couple of months ago I made my first piped cushion, the first one has a bit of a daggy join on it 'cos I didn't know how to...wish I had seen your video then..great job.

ok, I have just finished the zipper tutorial and I am totally making a pillow this week!! I just have one question: do you make the pillow case the same size as the pillow form?

BRILLIANT!!!
Thanks so much for a great tutorial.
Looking forward to seeing part 2 with the zippy bits!
Andi :-)

hi luisa - i like my pillows well stuffed, so i always cut the covers the same size as the form. so, for an 18" square form, i cut the fabric 18" square which after sewing gives me a 17" cover that my 18" form fits in easily. make sense?

Everyone hates their voice on camera:) But it is awesome to hear another bloggers voice that you have followed...kinda feels more like meeting them. And great video tutorial! I once sewed piping and put zippers in pillows with my old $100.00 machine (without a zipper foot) my parents bought me when i was 14. REALLy makes me love my Bernina that much more and doing it right!

Thank you so much for these great videos! I'm a novice and can never seem to make sense of written instructions when it comes to sewing.

erin - i'm just now getting back in town and can not wait to view your videos. i've been on a pillowcase making kick lately and could have SO used these!! i'm so excited to get on board and try out the lapped zipper technique especially. thank you so much for these!!

THANK YOU!! I've never made piping before, but I've used the ready-made kind when I'm making pillows. I've always just sewn the three layers together, assuming that's how it's done and I'm just inept. So happy to see that I should've been doing it in steps. I can't wait to try this again!! Thanks so much!
Posted by: Wendi | November 09, 2010 at 08:12 AM
you can sew it with all three layers together, but i find that you get better results if you do it in steps. plus, it doesn't really take that much longer at all!

I just finished watching your tutorials and they are so good! Thank you. Piping and zippers have always made me nervous. Now I feel like I can give it a go. Now to pick a color for my couch. : )
